The past 60 hours have been eye opening to some and life altering to those that have experienced it. An earthquake that registered at 7.0 with aftershocks at 5.0 rocked the capital city of Port-au-Prince Haiti. So far close to, if not more than 50 thousand people have perished. We have seen images of families in peril, children and loved one lost in the rubble and/or dead from the fallen debris. Haiti is one of the poorest islands in the Western Hemisphere despite their abundantly rich culture. They need us.
When God blesses you with a loving spirit it won’t sit still when others are in need. I personally have Haitian friends who are concerned about friends and loved ones on the island. The spark to get things rolling in the DMV started with a tweet from Yodit Gebreyes a young promoter, grad student and exceptional humanitarian from the area.
With that tweet she reached many others and the ending result is the young leaders from the DMV area (DC, Maryland, Virginia) taking time out of their hectic schedules to come together, in an impromptu manner, to come up with a way to lend assistance to those who need it so very much. What will take place will be a series of events designed to raise money to assist with the Haitian Earthquake Relief.
The first of these events will take place on Sunday January 17th 2010 at Bus Boys and Poets located at 2021 14th street. This event will start at 6 pm and last until 11 pm. A $10 donation will include and Open Mic Forum & Live Art show. Artist Demont Peekaso will be doing live art work that will later on be auctioned off. All proceeds will be donated.
I will keep you updated via this blog on the subsequent events. I’m very proud of the area in which I live. This very well could have been our loved ones we are digging out of the rubble. The roof that is keeping you safe and sound could have become your tomb. Natural disasters can occur at any time and any place on this planet. I think we all know that but it may take an event of this magnitude to help us remember.
